primarily in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. Our inquiry shifts focus from \u201cwhat\u201d is blackness to \u201cwhere\u201d and \u201cwhen\u201d is blackness. Students will analyze the fluidity of blackness and the implications for the production of ideologies, discourses, and identities of Black people. Materials for analysis may include primary and secondary written texts, film, video, and audio by James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Beyonc\u00e9, Julie Dash, Saidiya Hartman, and Nina Simone.
