Braiding Sweetgrass
By: Robin Wall Kimmerer
Braiding SweetGrass is a book by Robin Wall Kimmer, an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Kimmer is coming from the perspective of a mother, scientist, and Indigenous persons. This book dives into the connection between living things and human efforts to take on the world in a sustainable way. Kimmer explores these ideas by coming from an Indigenous perspective where she uses her Indigenous knowledge, practices, and understanding to guide the readers to understand how Native people have used their core values to guide the way they function in this world. Within the first chapter Kimmer dives into her tribe’s creation story and leads the reader to an understanding of the core values that have been emphasized through the original instructions. The core values that are emphasized through this book dive into the ideas of paying attention to the mind, body, and spirit in relation to the world and all the living things that are within it.
