Mental Health

Mental Health:

When I started my journey in discovering what mental health means to me, I was 19 years old and in my first year of college. At this moment in time, I remember the first thought I had when it came to mental health was figuring out whether you felt well or not, but it is actually deeper than that. To me, mental health is an understanding of where your mind is at and feeling in that present moment. One way I check in with myself is by asking myself these questions throughout the day:

  • “What am I feeling?”
  • “How am I doing?”
  • “What do I need?”

It is important to take care of yourself and figure out what you need in order to function. There are times when I have not been able to figure out what I was feeling or what I needed which was also totally okay. As a result, in those types of moments, I acknowledge that I did not know what I was feeling or needed at that moment in time, therefore, I was going to figure it out either in that present moment or when I have a moment in the near future. Taking the time to process my thoughts and feelings is important to me because it helps me to continue moving forward throughout my day or even in the days ahead. To me, mental health is not one thing but many things that have affected one’s daily occurrences. One’s mental health will always be different from person to person and can even differ from hour to hour or from moment to moment for a single person.

Here are some concept that are related to mental health that have help me have a deeper understand of it complexities.
