Alison Saar

Alison Saar is a contemporary mixed media, sculpture, printer, and installation artist. Born in 1956 in L.A. to Betty Saar, a well known African-American printer and installation artist, and Richar Saar, who worked in ceramics, Alison Saar grew up surrounded by the arts.  Saar graduated from Scripps college and later received her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design.  She works with themes of the African diaspora, the way the body connects to identity, spirituality, and the experience of powerful women complicated by race and gender.  Much of her work is inspired by the Greek, Roman, and African mythology she learned about in college.  Saar has received many awards and has been featured in many museums for her work which spans across multiple mediums and is informed by her multicultural experience and the experience of other marginalized groups.
