Mickalene Thomas

 

Mickalene Thomas is a New York-based contemporary visual artist whose art aims to re-envision female beauty, sexuality, and power. She works across mediums, making paintings, collages, photography, video, and installation art. In her, work Thomas addresses “sense of self” in the ways feminine spaces and women are depicted in pop culture and art while drawing on art history.

Thomas, well known for her rhinestone, enamel, and acrylic paintings, as well as her portraits of African Amerian women, explores modern notions of beauty and sexuality, drawing heavily from pop culture and Pop Art.”
