Gideon Nye (1812-1888)5<\/a><\/sup>“Nye, Gideon, 1812-1888,” The Frick Collection, last modified February 7, 2020, accessed April 24, 2020, https:\/\/research.frick.org\/directory\/detail\/1254<\/a>.<\/span> is most notably remembered as a peripheral figure involved in Chinese- American trade: in 1843 he formed the House of Nye Parkin &amp; Co. and in 1853 he withdrew from this firm and it was renamed Nye Brothers &amp; Co. Nye spent minimal time in New York. His affiliation with the art world primarily has to do with his personal investments in art as a collector. He turned to New York in 1845 and exhibited a collection of paintings he bought in London which are affiliated with the Gallery of the Lyceum Building, a temporary rental space.6<\/a><\/sup>“Spent in China,” 3.<\/span> Many existing records discuss Nye\u2019s aspirations towards finding a permanent gallery space that resembles the British Gallery in London.7<\/a><\/sup>Gideon,\u00a0Catalogue of the Pictures,\u00a023.<\/span><\/p>\n
