Sons in 1872, William Pate\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gallery of Landscape Painters\u2014American Scenery<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, is a folio of 24 natural, picturesque landscapes that brought together America\u2019s best painters and engravers.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004180000000000000000_37\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004180000000000000000_37-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004180000000000000000_37-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">The Philadelphia Print Shop, \u201cPate\u2019s Gallery of Landscape Painters \u2013 American Scenery\u201d (web page), Philadelphia Print Shop (web site), accessed April 14, 2020. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philaprintshop.com\/pate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.philaprintshop.com\/pate.html<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 The top quality engravings were modelled after masterworks of American landscape art by painters like George Inness and Thomas Hill, who were loosely associated with various American art movements of the time like the Hudson River school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In their advertisement in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yale Banner 1888,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the gallery refers to its etchings and engravings as \u201chigh class,\u201d while simultaneously defining them as \u201cmoderate in price.\u201d\u00a0 William Pate &amp;
