founded by Daniel Cottier when his first gallery opened in London in 1869.\u00a0 Contemporaries with William Morris, Ford Madox Brown, and John Ruskin, Daniel Cottier, was a skilled stained glass artist from Glasgow affiliated with the Aesthetic Movement.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004170000000000000000_73\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">The Metropolitan Museum of Art, \u201cSpring\u201d York gallery sold works characteristic of the decorative arts movement such as stained glass, gasoliers, rugs, and the occasional picture.\u00a0 Although a large part of the gallery was based in decorative arts, the New York gallery received the bulk of its media and public attention for its importation of modern and avant-garde European works.\u00a0 In 1877, an article in the New York Times reviewed Cottier\u2019s exhibition on Fifth Avenue, commending his acquisition of \u201can extraordinary collection of masters.\u201d<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004170000000000000000_73\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">\u201cOpening of the Cottier Gallery on Fifth-Avenue\u2014An Extraordinary Collection of Masters,\u201d New York Times, March 1, 1877, The Fine Arts.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Whilst the collection was not one of large quantity, the author noted that it was significant for its top notch quality, exposing American audiences to the French, Dutch, and English avant-garde paintings by the likes of Corot and Daubigny.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In January of the following year, another article in the New York Times praised the gallery, this time for their water-color exhibition and its especially notable large canvas by the deceased Italian artist Monticelli.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004170000000000000000_73\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">\u201cRemarkable Paintings at Cottier\u2019s The Exhibition of Water-Colors,\u201d New York Times, January 24, 1878, The Fine Arts.<\/span> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three months later, the periodical reported an update on the sale and location of the high status, imported Cottier paintings.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004170000000000000000_73\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">\u201cThe Cotter Collection of Paintings,\u201d New York Times, April 17, 1878.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0The reporter remarks that most of the collection was hanging in the Leavitt gallery at Broadway and the corner of Twelfth Street.\u00a0 Although some pieces had been sold and a couple added, the remainder of the collection was to be sold the next week at auction.\u00a0 Despite the Times\u2019 claim that it represented \u201cthe finest collection of modern masters ever brought together in this country,\u201d the article goes on to discuss the rumors circulating that the New York branch might shut down, lamenting the possibility of such successful tastemakers leaving the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After Cottier\u2019s death in 1891, the New York gallery\u2019s success continued, although its focus shifted away from the decorative arts as its painting sales\u2014especially those of the Impressionists\u2014increased to keep the gallery in business until 1915.\u00a0 In 1908, a catalogue title page advertised an exhibition consisting of a selection of 24 paintings from the gallery collection that composed of almost 500 \u201coriginal paintings by old and modern masters.\u201d<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004170000000000000000_73\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004170000000000000000_73-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">Cottier Gallery, A Group of Twenty-Four Paintings of the French, Spanish, German, and American Schools, New York: Frick Art Reference Library, published ca. 1908.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 Several works by Degas, Manet, and Corot are recorded through the National Gallery of Art as sold through Cottier &amp; Co. (after other transactions with Durand Ruel).
