Considering accessibility enhances the experience of all participants. Increasing all students\u2019 comfort level and ability to participate\u2014regardless of established disability\u2014results in a more inclusive and more productive learning environment for everyone. These suggestions were developed with common disability accommodations in mind however, the fundamental rationale is that Universal Design strategies benefit all learners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Lesley Levy, Keona Ervin, and Tina Chong from the Accessibility Task Force are excited to share a series of accessibility suggestions for your teaching. Each Teaching Times newsletter for Fall 2024, they&#8217;ll present a new tip. Try it out in your class and share your experiences and insights with us. Email t.chong@bowdoin.edu with your accessibility practices. Let&#8217;s work together to create a more inclusive learning environment for all students.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggestion 1: Help students prepare for class.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make your class slides\/instructor notes available before class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Benefits for students:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students will come to class prepared to ask questions, participate in discussions, and don\u2019t have to copy down what is already on the slides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will help students catch up on missed material and help them prepare for a meeting during office hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodation addressed: Notetaking assistance and necessary absences due to disability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Positive side effects for instructors:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Making slides available before class reduces last minute class preparation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing students with access to class slides\/instructor notes can help them catch up on missed material and reduce the need for individual meetings during office hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Instructor tip: I make slides available roughly 24 hours before class.
