During class, Gurung circulates through the lecture-hall aisles and calls on students from around the room. During breaks and after class, he\u2019ll talk with students who line up to meet with him. Outside of class, his students are encouraged to attend office hours, which he runs both in person and virtually. He\u2019s created a professional Instagram account as another way students can connect with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230; More on meeting students as people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some large-enrollment courses<\/strong>\u00a0rely on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/the-students-who-help-teach-their-peers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>\u00a0undergraduate learning assistants<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to allow for more relational interactions inside and outside of class time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Learning students\u2019 names requires effort,<\/strong>\u00a0but there are research-informed techniques that can help. Michelle D. Miller, a professor in the department of psychological sciences at Northern Arizona University, has written a book on the subject,\u00a0<em>A Teacher\u2019s Guide to Learning Student Names: Why You Should, Why It\u2019s Hard, How You Can<\/em>. She talked with\u00a0<em>The Chronicle<\/em>\u00a0about her approach in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/how-can-professors-learn-students-names-a-scholar-of-memory-shares-her-process\"><u>an interview<\/u><\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Another way professors can show they care about students<\/strong>\u00a0as people is to survey them before class begins. Tracie Marcella Addy, founding director of the Institute for Teaching, Innovation, and Inclusive Pedagogy (TIIP) at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, has developed a \u201cWho\u2019s in Class\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/jmbe.00183-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>survey<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that can be sent, anonymously and voluntarily, to help create a better classroom climate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Light-touch,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/newsletter\/teaching\/2023-04-20\"><u>personalized emails from instructors<\/u><\/a>\u00a0can shift how some students, especially those from marginalized groups, perceive a course \u2014 and help improve their academic performance,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.ucdavis.edu\/sites\/main\/files\/myprofessorcares-20221003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>according to a study<\/u><\/a>\u00a0from two professors at the University of California at Davis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Full article available here.
