Maine’s Brookfield Hydropower Near-Monopoly

Brookfield Renewable owns 87% of hydropower in Maine, and significant portions of wind power. It is expanding to solar power and biomass. It also owns dozens of dams across the state. Brookfield started in Maine in 2002, under the name Brascan, and rebranded to Brookfield in 2005. It is owned by a Canadian investment firm with over $900 billion in assets. The parent company is the largest commercial property owner in Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington. Additionally, it has extensive investments in fossil fuels.
