Discussions on a treaty began at the United Nations in 1959. After multiple drafts, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States signed the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on July 1, 1968, agreeing to pursue general disarmament.<sup id=\"mfn-content-00000000000008640000000000000000_477-1\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000008640000000000000000_477\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000008640000000000000000_477-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">United Nations (UNODA), Office for Disarmament Affairs. \u201cTreaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).\u201d Accessed July 29, 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/disarmament.unoda.org\/wmd\/nuclear\/npt\/.\">Link.<\/a><\/span> China and France did not join until 1992.<\/p>\n<p>The nonnuclear signatories pledged to forgo the acquisition of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Today, 190 countries are party to the NPT, making it the most widely adhered-to arms control agreement.
