One study reveals that approximately 79% of the radiation we experience comes from natural sources, while medical applications contribute to 19%, and the remaining 2% is linked to nuclear power industry and nuclear weapons testing fallout.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000008080000000000000000_355\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Wild, Alan. Cambridge University Press, 1993. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/CBO9780511623530\">Link.<\/a><\/span> It is important to note, however, that these estimates widely vary.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the diverse sources of radiation, public concern mainly revolves (arguably, rightly so) around the effects of manmade radionuclides released into the environment through two primary activities: atmospheric nuclear weapons testing and the operation of nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n<p>These activities have significantly increased the presence of artificial radionuclides in our surroundings and led to contamination of vast areas of land worldwide. Understanding the impact of these human activities on our environment is critical in addressing public concerns and developing measures to mitigate their consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Semipalatinsk (Semey) stands as the most heavily contaminated site among the Soviet nuclear test locations.<\/p>\n<p>Recent specialized studies have revealed alarming levels of radioactive isotopes like <sup>90<\/sup>Sr, <sup>137<\/sup>Cs, <sup>239+240<\/sup>Pu, and <sup>241<\/sup>Am in the soil and vegetation of the Semipalatinsk region.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000008080000000000000000_355\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">International Atomic Energy Agency. \u201cRadiological Conditions at the Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan:\u201d Text. However, elevated levels of radioactivity were also recorded in the Tel&#8217;kem and Sary-Uzan areas.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000008080000000000000000_355\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000008080000000000000000_355-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">International Atomic Energy Agency. \u201cRadiological Conditions at the Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan:\u201d Text. In other words, due to the consequences of nuclear testing, the land in these areas is deemed unsuitable for permanent habitation.
