{"id":15,"date":"2020-02-27T20:44:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T20:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020\/?page_id=15"},"modified":"2020-05-15T19:44:14","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T23:44:14","slug":"synthesis-of-professional-articles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020-efernand\/syntheses\/synthesis-of-professional-articles\/","title":{"rendered":"Synthesis of Professional Articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Teacher Preparation for CR Teaching\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esearch by Thomas Dee and Emily Penner of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stanford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> University<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">made it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">clear that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ulturally<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">responsive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0teaching (CR)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is effective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in increasing student achievement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, its lack of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standardized<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0teacher\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">preparation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0makes it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">difficult<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to implement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0nationwide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Education\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Professor Heather Hill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, there is a troubling lack\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on the preparation for teachers to teach CR curriculums (Hill, 2020).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In fact, many educators who currently use CR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculums<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have had to create that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with little\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guidance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, leading to widely variable CR courses throughout the nation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of these educators are feat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ured<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in fellow educator Larry\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ferlazzo\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0blog, which is a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">compilation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of educators\u2019 ideas on how CR teaching should play out in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">classroom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strategies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have the themes of centering student experiences, making safe spaces for discussion, asking for student feedback, ensuring classroom materials are culturally diverse, and acknowledging one\u2019s own relationship with race. However, how educators came up with these\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strategies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ranged from personal experience to theory from books (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ferlazzo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 2020). The lack of standardization reinforces that there is no one way to make lessons CR, thus making it even more difficult to teach these lessons.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Implementing CR curriculums nationwide means having educators of various experience levels\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0comfortability with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">discussing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">key topics of these lessons, such as race<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teaching th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">se\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculums<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Implementing a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standard CR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like what is being done in California<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with ethnic studies courses\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through groups such as <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020-efernand\/list-of-organizations\/\">Ethnic Studies Now<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is only half the battle.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For its success,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">educators must be prepared and willing to discuss topics of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">divide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in our society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which can be achieved through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standardized and proven-to-be effective\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">educator\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">preparation programs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thus,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nce bills for standardized CR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculums<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are passed,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community groups who fought for them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">should also fight for these programs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>References:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW79532415 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 SCXW79532415 BCX0\">Ferlazzo<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW79532415 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79532415 BCX0\">, L.
