Thankfully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can and should turn to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">philosophers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\/organizers for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guidance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inform<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">themselves<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">basics<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of community organizing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From this course, I have broken down\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">principals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">organizing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0into three main points<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_92\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92\" class=\"wp-image-92 \" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020-efernand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/2020\/05\/myles-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020-efernand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/2020\/05\/myles-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-1015-spring-2020-efernand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/2020\/05\/myles.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-92\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paulo Freire Freedom School<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first point is that <strong>organizers should serve as facilitators<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0to unlock a community\u2019s collective\u00a0knowledge<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ducators<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and organizers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Myles Horton and Paulo Freire\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">established the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Highlander<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Institute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a learning\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">institute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individuals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0learned about the basics of organizing through community<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">led discussion and debate. These future organizers were taught that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individuals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hold\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">substantial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amount<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">knowledge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about the issues they face\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they should be helped to unlock\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">creating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0spaces where they can share their experiences and connect with others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Horton and Freire, 2014, p.146)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Realizing others in the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have similar experiences, it will form a bond that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">validates the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0individual\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> experiences and create a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">empowering<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sense of unity. Alinsky<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0argues that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the unlocking of collective knowledge is useless if\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have no way of doing anything about this knowledge and to improve the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">situations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they find themselves in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hey will have \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">no course of action except to blow their tops\u201d (Alinsky, 1971, p. 118).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Understandably, this would be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unproductive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the community. If there is to be social change, there must be ways to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0get<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0there\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">productive expression of passion.
