The virtual connections offered online can extend to personal and political connections through community activist work, strengthening the ties between neighbors, teachers, parents, students and community members and including multiple voices in the discourse around public school closure. Many of these organizations help to link similarly-minded grassroots organizations around the country.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The ten organizations and individuals listed below engage with social media to expand the conversation around school closure. VOYCE uses youth-driven research to attempt to increase Chicago&#8217;s graduation rate, paying particular attention to the school-to-prison pipeline, the potential of restorative justice practices, and the difficulties inherent in high-stakes testing. In the spring of 2013, members of VOYCE joined other students and community members in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbez.org\/news\/chicago-students-protest-closings-plan-106282\" target=\"_blank\">city march<\/a> and boycotted a required standardized test to protest the CPS school closure proposal.<a title=\"References\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/school-closure-references\/\" target=\"_blank\"><sup>P17<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-152\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/Action-Now-150x102.png\" alt=\"Action Now\" width=\"150\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/Action-Now-150x102.png 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/Action-Now-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/Action-Now.png 379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>2. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actionnow.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Action Now<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ActionNowChi\" target=\"_blank\">@ActionNowChi<\/a> and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ActionNow1\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>)<br \/>\nAction Now brings together workers and families to address multiple issues in the community, including public education, wages, housing, civic engagement, and corporate accountability. In their work in public education, Action Now members fight against school closure because of its effect on communities, its racial targeting, and its displacement of students and teachers. Action Now is working to increase knowledge about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actionnow.org\/lsc_summit\" target=\"_blank\">Local School Councils (LSCs) <\/a>and their role in bringing control of public schools to the community members. Michelle Gunderson (based in Chicago) (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/msgunderson\" target=\"_blank\">@MSGunderson<\/a> and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michelle.gunderson.education.matters\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>)<br \/>\nMichelle Gunderson has taught in the Chicago Public Schools for 27 years, currently teaches fourth grade, is a doctoral student in education at Loyola Chicago, and is the functional VP for the Chicago Teachers Union. Gunderson developed her own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livingindialogue.com\/michelle-gunderson-offers-pledge-for-ethical-use-of-student-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Pledge for the Ethical Use of Student Data<\/a> as an effort to raise awareness about the misuse of student testing data, including for ability sorting, as punishment (summer school\/retention), and as justification for privatization of public schools (low-performing schools are starved for resources, deemed inefficient, closed, and replaced with privately-owned charter schools). In January 2013, <a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2013\/01\/19\/parents-teachers-rally-to-save-neighborhood-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gunderson engaged in activism<\/a> in Chicago to emphasize the importance of saving neighborhood schools from closure.<a title=\"References\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/school-closure-references\/\" target=\"_blank\"><sup>P19<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>New York City, NY<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-89\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/NYGPS-protest-150x100.png\" alt=\"NYGPS protest\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/NYGPS-protest-150x100.png 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-abrown\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2014\/11\/NYGPS-protest.png 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nygps.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorkers for Great Public Schools<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NY_GPS\" target=\"_blank\">@NY_GPS<\/a> and on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/newyork.gps\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>)<br \/>\nNYGPS were active preceding the 2013 mayoral election and have attempted to undo damaging education policies set forth by Mayor Bloomberg. They petitioned to place a moratorium on school closings and colocations (charter schools located in shared public school space) and protested at city hall against school closings and cuts to public school librarian positions. With the election of Mayor de Blasio, NYGPS spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zansari8\" target=\"_blank\">Zakiyah Ansari<\/a>, a parent of eight children who attended NYC public schools and a fierce critic of public school closure, was selected as a member of the new mayor&#8217;s transition team and is involved with educational policy decisions. CoWE aims to work with parents, families, and communities, to encourage transparency and accountability in school-related decision making, to preserve public education as an institution, to remedy underresourced school circumstances, to oppose racism and discriminatory practices, and to encourage teaching and resist testing. Additionally, the organization provides media coverage of many issues that affect low-income communities of color in the city. He discussed numerous education issues with activists, educators, and scholars as guests on his show. Johnson addresses school closures in this <a href=\"http:\/\/theassailedteacher.com\/2012\/02\/27\/education-reform-and-reproductive-rights-via-at-the-chalk-face\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog post about education reform and reproductive rights<\/a>, this <a href=\"http:\/\/atthechalkface.com\/2013\/06\/30\/an-open-letter-to-new-teach-for-america-recruits\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog post discouraging people from entering the teaching profession through Teach for America<\/a>, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogtalkradio.com\/chalkface\/2013\/03\/24\/at-the-chalk-face-progressive-edreform-talk\" target=\"_blank\">radio show with CTU president Karen Lewis<\/a>, and this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogtalkradio.com\/chalkface\/2014\/06\/29\/at-the-chalk-face-education-talk-radio-sundays-at-5pm-est\" target=\"_blank\">radio show with Zephyr Teachout<\/a>. In May 2014, J4J sent an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/answer-sheet\/wp\/2014\/05\/14\/holder-duncan-asked-to-investigate-racially-discriminatory-school-closings-in-new-orleans\/\" target=\"_blank\">open letter<\/a> to Eric Holder and Arne Duncan, asking them to look into the racially discriminatory school closings in New Orleans, Chicago, and Newark. They cite the recent focus on the achievement gap and testing and instead encourage a focus on the opportunity gap, often felt by low-income students of color. Their website features blogs, resources, and videos that discuss current issues in education such as school closure. In May 2013, the National OTL Campaign released a series of infographics demonstrating the harm of school closures.
