{"id":7,"date":"2014-11-10T13:18:22","date_gmt":"2014-11-10T18:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2014-12-19T16:06:50","modified_gmt":"2014-12-19T21:06:50","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Asian-American Youth in Urban Education<\/p>\n<p>Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States comprise a heterogeneous population.\u00a0There are approximately 18 million Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in the U.S.,\u00a0representing nearly 6% of the total population.<sup>1<\/sup> This community is\u00a0growing at a record pace, increasing by over 40% in the past decade. In 2010, 49% of Asian Americans ages 25 and older had a bachelor&#8217;s degree, compared with 28% of the U.S. population.<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0Due to their educational achievement, Asian-Americans are often viewed as a &#8220;model minority&#8221;. This stereotype perpetuates the idea that Asian-Americans no longer face barriers in education and makes it\u00a0easy to overlook the needs of various ethnic groups. However, the wide disparity in educational achievement in the AAPI population is apparent once the data is disaggregated by ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-134\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2014\/11\/asam-educ-levels-08-10.png\" alt=\"asam-educ-levels-08-10\" width=\"648\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2014\/11\/asam-educ-levels-08-10.png 648w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2014\/11\/asam-educ-levels-08-10-150x124.png 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2014\/11\/asam-educ-levels-08-10-300x249.png 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014-syue\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2014\/11\/asam-educ-levels-08-10-624x519.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/> <sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The perception of Asian-American students as a &#8220;model minority&#8221; has led to a lack of research and policy surrounding their educational trajectories and the obstacles that these students may face in school. This lack of research negatively impacts Asian-American students, especially immigrant youth or those\u00a0living in poverty. These students disproportionately live in urban areas, and face many of\u00a0the same challenges that other students of color face such as access to ELL resources and services,\u00a0the school to prison pipeline, culturally relevant\u00a0experiences in school, etc. However, their needs are often overlooked due to the misconception that Asian-American students are all high achieving.
