Overview

A main issue surrounding equity in urban education is funding inequalities. For Colorado, a unique funding formula creates numerous educational issues that target already marginalized, urban communities. Fighting for students, parents, and teachers, the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) and the Caucus of Today’s Teachers (CTT) utilize social justice unionism to help advance the interests of the community. Namely, both groups conducted strikes, social media initiatives, and town halls to target unfair teacher pay and funding inequalities. By scrutinizing how the DCTA adheres to and differs from certain aspects of social justice unionism, we can learn more about effective educational organizing.
