Introduction

This case study will look at two recent actions taken by the Chicago Teachers Union to combat police presence and unequal conditions in Chicago public schools. The study will focus on the 11-day school strike carried out in 2019 by CTU, and a BLM protest they assisted in organizing following George Floyd’s death in 2020. The Chicago Teachers Union is known for its progressive, social justice oriented unionism, fighting for broad and complex issues facing students. This model of unionism will be analyzed deeper on the following pages. This study aims to showcase the recent work of CTU, as well as provide evidence of successful social justice unionism.
