{"id":186,"date":"2020-10-19T11:31:58","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T15:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2020-mngo\/?page_id=186"},"modified":"2020-12-18T02:24:35","modified_gmt":"2020-12-18T07:24:35","slug":"organizing-strategies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2020-mngo\/organizing-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"Organizing Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Padres Unidos most directly involves educators and leaders in the community, who work to organize and mobilize volunteers in the community to together uplift Santa Ana students and their family as a whole, both inside and outside of the classroom, though it can be argued that experiences outside the classroom undoubtedly inform in-class learning.\u00a0 Mass incarceration, familial structures, and immigrant miseducation or lack of access to education all inform urban education in the Santa Ana area and the work of Padres Unidos in working to combat and mediate such struggles.\u00a0 Padres Unidos approached the needs of their community by formulating programs to specifically address areas in need of support, including: \u201cParent as Teachers\/Early Education\u201d program focused classroom readiness for young children entering the schooling system and how parents can support their students, the comprehensive \u201cStrong Families\u201d program, a \u201cCommunity Engagement\u201d program for \u201ccommited parent volunteers\u201d to potentially receive certification to further support those in their community, as well as \u201cServices for Families of Incarcerated Youth\u201d which work to directly address the gaps in community and increased need that incarceration can create in families and students.\u00a0 Their direction of creating distinct programs for needs rather than trying to address the wide range of circumstances affecting the community members of Santa Ana have resulted in a stronger, more supported, and empowered community.\u00a0 Through their programs, over 50% of parents report \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the ability to identify when they needed help and actively sought out this help\u201d and \u201can increase in viewing themselves as valuable and able to contribute to their communities.\u201d\u00a0 In the classroom, \u201c99% of the child participants of the Early Education Programs demonstrated an increase in their scores.
