Experiencing, witnessing, or supporting a loved one who has experienced sexual harassment, assault and\/or domestic violence is a trauma that can impact students in school (Woodbridge et al., 2015).<\/span><\/i><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northbrooklyncoalition.org\">North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Viol<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.northbrooklyncoalition.org\">ence<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-106 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/Logo-FINAL-e1484617407818-1-300x97.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"97\" 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence, a coalition formed in 1998 by six community-based organizations, offers a variety of services to survivors of domestic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violence and the wider communities of Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Greenpoint. \u00a0They provide emotional support (therapy, support groups, crisis intervention, psycho-education) and advocacy to survivors, organize community education through workshops for community members and service providers (particularly the New York Police Department), and facilitate community meetings to ensure that the needs of survivors and their families are being met.<\/span><sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahsinn.org\/en\/who-we-are\/\"><b>Sarah&#8217;s Inn<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-107 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/AAEAAQAAAAAAAAX4AAAAJDFmNmQzMTUzLTQ0ZWQtNDlkOS04NTNhLWJjYTZkZTMwMWFlOQ.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 1981 by Oak Park residents and based in Chicago, Sarah\u2019s Inn works to support those affected by domestic violence and improve the situation for the future generation. \u00a0They provide education on domestic violence through the Together Strong Project, (an in school violence prevention education program), the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth Committee, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a group of high school students who gain leadership skills while learning about violence prevention, and trainings that are approved as official by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Illinois Certified Professional Domestic Violence Board. \u00a0Additionally, Sarah\u2019s Inn supports survivors and current victims with advocacy services from volunteer advocates, legal support, a hotline, and online resources.<\/span><sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveactiondc.org\/our-work\/trainings-workshops\/\"><b>Collective Action for Safe Spaces<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-109 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/cass-logo-large-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/cass-logo-large-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/cass-logo-large-624x480.jpg 624w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/cass-logo-large.jpg 797w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/>This DC based organization, which began as a blog, aspires to make all people feel safe in public spaces by encouraging citizens to hold each other accountable in order to eliminate sexual harassment and assault. \u00a0They achieve this mission by educating decision-makers about sexual harassment, publicizing personal testimony from survivors to advocate for more research and policy change, and working with transit authority to develop policy around sexual assault on the Metro. \u00a0Additionally, Collective Action for Safe Spaces runs Rethink Masculinity workshops that explore and challenge how society constructs masculinity and finally, they facilitate trainings on sexual assault at organizations and workplaces, particularly bars.<\/span><sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. The traumas of family fragmentation and incarcerated parents can affect students in schools (Woodbridge et al., 2015).<\/span><\/i><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopeformiami.org\/childrenofinmates\"><b>Hope for Miami<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-110 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo-300x125.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"85\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo-150x63.png 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo.png 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/>Children of Inmates, one of Hope for Miami\u2019s many programs that aim to better the community of Miami, first locates children of inmates, no easy task given the shame around having a parent in prison. COI then provides the children with crisis support at Coordinated Care Centers, counseling, \u201cmentoring services to reduce the children\u2019s risks for antisocial behaviors and to facilitate their stabilization,\u201d and a means of connecting with their incarcerated parents via prison visits and video calling.<\/span><sup>5 <\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopenetworkinc.org\/index.php\"><b>HOPE Network<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serving the great<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"176\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo.jpg 176w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/logo-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/>er Milwaukee area, HOPE Network targets single mothers, building a community, providing education on parenting, and promoting self-reliance. \u00a0While some services are free, HOPE Network asks that mothers pay a small ($5) annual fee, which gives them access to newspapers and newsletters about parenting, gatherings, events, and outings for mothers and children that foster community, free cribs, and scholarships that cover day-care tuition.<\/span><sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Witnessing or experiencing police violence, militarism, incarceration, and\/or punishment based approaches causes trauma that could infiltrate into the schoolhouse (Woodbridge et al., 2015).<\/span><\/i><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/peoplesjustice.org\/about\">Peoples\u2019 Justices for Community Control and Police Accountability<\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The coalition that makes up Peopl<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/fathers_day_march_2012-1-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/fathers_day_march_2012-1-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/fathers_day_march_2012-1-150x98.jpg 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/fathers_day_march_2012-1.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/>e\u2019s Justice was formed in 2006 in response to New York City Police Department\u2019s killing of Sean Bell, Trent Benefield, and Joseph Guzman. \u00a0Working primarily in Black, Latino, and Asian communities in New York City, People\u2019s Justice offers Cop Watch training so that this police accountability practice can be implemented in more communities and Know Your Rights trainings in schools, organizations, and community centers. \u00a0Additionally, People\u2019s Justice facilitates collaborations between NYC artists and community members to create murals and skits that educate and create awareness about police brutality.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-114\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/va17GjAd_400x400-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"117\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/va17GjAd_400x400-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/va17GjAd_400x400-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/va17GjAd_400x400-1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 117px) 100vw, 117px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baypeace.org\"><b>BAY-Peace<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in Oakland, BAY-peace recruits \u201cyouth action\u201d teams, groups of working class students of color, that work together to address issues such as militarism, racial profiling, and police brutality. \u00a0Developing their own leadership skills all the while, youth are empowered to spearhead community organizing, lead workshops to educate other youth, and engage in artistic resistance. \u00a0BAY-Peace also educates youth on their right to opt out of the military after high school.<\/span><sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ellabakercenter.org\"><b>Ella Baker Center for Human Rights<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-115 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/EBC_Logo-1-300x107.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"73\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/EBC_Logo-1-300x107.png 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/EBC_Logo-1-150x54.png 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/EBC_Logo-1.png 517w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/>Ella Baker Center, a membership organization based in Oakland, promotes a Truth and\u00a0Reinvestment approach; they create awareness about prisons, policing, and punishment based approaches and turn victims into leaders that reinvest resources into the community. \u00a0They do so through campaigns (about jobs not jails and using savings from Proposition 47 for community-based programs, for instance), pushes for policy change (to terminate abusive treatment in jails, for example), and social evenings that foster conversation about public safety. \u00a0Also, Ella Baker Center is in the process of creating Restore Oakland, an intentionally- planned economic and community hub that provides job opportunities to people of color and formerly incarcerated individuals.<\/span><sup>9<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Illness or injury is a trauma that could affect students at school. \u00a0Certain illnesses, such as HIV\/AIDs and asthma, are prevalent in urban areas (Woodbridge et al., 2015).<\/span><\/i><sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ace-ej.org\/reep\"><b>Roxbury Environmental Empowerment Project (REEP)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-116 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/reep_members-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/reep_members-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/reep_members-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/reep_members.jpg 408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/>Through youth-run member meetings, campaign committees, community building, organizing training, social events, and retreats, Boston youth fight for environmental justice while gaining leadership skills. \u00a0One of REEP\u2019s programs, the Asthma-Diesel Campaign, aims to lessen pollution from diesel vehicles that contributes to a childhood asthma epidemic. \u00a0In their fight for high quality retrofits and enforcement of anti-idling laws, they have convinced Capitol Waste Services to add retrofits to 72 garbage trucks and pushed Boston\u2019s mayor to sign their Diesel Emissions Reduction Ordinance, amongst other victories.<\/span><sup>10 <\/sup><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-117 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/Unknown-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/Unknown-1.png 197w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/154\/2017\/04\/Unknown-1-116x150.png 116w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 122px) 100vw, 122px\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vocal-ny.org\">Voices of\u00a0Community Activists New York\u00a0<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based in New York, VOCAL-NY has a few areas of focus, one being the empowerment and support of low-income people dealing with HIV\/AIDs. \u00a0VOCAL-NY pushes people with HIV\/AIDS to advocate for themselves through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movement Vote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a voter registration, education, and get out-the-vote program and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POWER Academy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a leadership development program that gives its students the skills to participate in policymaking relevant to their experiences. \u00a0VOCAL-NY emphasizes getting to the root causes of the epidemic, such as homelessness and poverty, and thus does work to ensure that funding for supportive housing programs for people with HIV\/AIDs are not cut.<\/span><sup>11 <\/sup><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ol>\n<li>Woodbridge, M.W., Sumi, W.C., Thornton, S.P., Fabrikant, N., Rouspil, K.M., Langley, A.K., &amp; Kataoka, S.H.
