Robert Anda of the federal Centers for Disease Control, Vincent Felitti of Kaiser Permanente and Laura Porter of the Family Policy Council in Washington state. Examines the breakdown of types\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-HG8H4n2j9I\">Adverse Childhood Experiences<\/a>\u00a0(ACEs) experienced by 17,000 primarily middle-class, college educated people. 87% of the people surveyed had undergone at least two ACEs. (1)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Examples of common trauma events: (Woodbridge et al., 2105).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>-Death of a loved one<\/p>\n<p>-Threat or experience of physical assault<\/p>\n<p>-Separation from a caregiver<\/p>\n<p>-Serious illness or injury<\/p>\n<p>-Serious accident<\/p>\n<p>-Witnessing a natural disaster<\/p>\n<p>See<a href=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-hpucker\/about\/trauma-definitions-from-twitters\/\">\u00a0Trauma Definitions from Twitter\u00a0<\/a>for some perspectives from educators and teachers on the definition of trauma.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">How prevalent is it?<\/p>\n<p>A trauma event may occur once, or it may be complex trauma, recurring or continuing over a long period of time (Terassi &amp; Crain de Galarce, 2017).<sup>3 \u00a0<\/sup><strong>Research has found that annually 5,000,000 children in the United States are exposed to trauma event(s) and that 70-80% of adolescents have experienced at least one traumatic event.<\/strong>\u00a0In fact, exposure to trauma is most prevalent during adolescence.
