{"id":7,"date":"2017-04-13T14:18:57","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T18:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-fall-2014\/?page_id=7"},"modified":"2017-05-15T12:06:56","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T16:06:56","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2017-jaustrie\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>August 23-August 31st 2005 Hurricane Katrina displaced thousands of New Orleans residents.\u00a0Prior to the hurricane, New Orleans was almost 70% black, with approximately 30% of its residents living in poverty.\u00a0About 112,000 of New Orleans 500,000 residents did not have access to a car during Hurricane Katrina. Without access to a vehicle residents had to either wait out the storm in their homes or go to the Superdome for shelter (19).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But\u00a0What Happened to New Orleans&#8217; Schools?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 100 of New Orleans 126 schools suffered damaged due to the hurricane (20).\u00a0The majority of school employees were replaced and approximately 80% of New Orleans public schools were mandated to be made into charter schools (21).
