1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

1000 Mothers is an organization that was started\u00a0in 2006 by Lorraine Franklin-Taylor, a mother who lost twin sons to gun violence in 2000. Lorrain Franklin-Taylor started to reach out to other grieving mothers in an effort to provide support and work towards violence prevention. Organizers work to guide family members as they\u00a0grapple with the trauma that follows the death of a loved one. The organization often hosts community events aimed at violence prevention, such as peace walks.<\/p>\n

Beats Rhymes and Life<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Based in Oakland, CA, Beats Rhymes and Life (BRL) is an organization that began as a way to give young people who have had to deal with violence a positive outlet to express themselves. BRL also aims to bridge the gap between youth of color who need help with mental illnesses (such as PTSD) and support for those illnesses.<\/p>\n

California Youth Outreach<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>California Youth Outreach was originally founded in the 1980s in Fresno, California, but has since spread to other California communities. The faith-based organization aims to keep young people away from gangs by providing them with educational supports, intervention programs, and support for their family members. Some of their programming includes gang outreach for students, truancy reduction, and community service projects.<\/p>\n
