La Familia Initiative<\/strong><\/a> is a parent organizing group, founded by Latino immigrant mothers to address the underperformance of their children at a San Francisco Bay Area middle school. By conducting home visits and holding community meetings, the group expanded to include more parents, who together planned a series of school activities and cultural events in order to give students a sense of pride and expose them to the ways they can contribute to their school. The initiative has seen improvements in student achievement and in student-administration relationships.<\/p>\n

Latino Youth Development Collaborative<\/a><\/strong> seeks to increase high school graduation for Latino students in Minneapolis by providing access to college preparedness programs. The organization also focuses on strengthening relationships between schools and families by teaching leadership skills and building understanding so that families can be confident and well-informed participants and advocates in the public education system.<\/p>\n

Con Mi Madre<\/a><\/strong> is an Austin-based organization that seeks to empower Latina women with bilingual, culturally-competent programming that engages mothers in their daughters\u2019 strivings toward higher education. The organization starts working with girls in sixth grade and follows them through college graduation, offering services that help them maintain academic success, build self-esteem, guide them through the college application process, and support them as they pursue their degrees. At the same time, Con Mi Madre works with mothers, showing them how their daughters\u2019 pursuit of higher education is achievable, guiding them through the education process, and teaching them how to best support their daughters\u2019 aspirations.<\/p>\n

Instituto del Progreso Latino<\/strong><\/a> focuses on developing leadership in Latino immigrant families in Chicago through a range of education programs. The organization operates with the motto \u201cRegister the student, enroll the family,\u201d as it enables entire families to support each other and address their own needs. Some of the programs that Instituto del Progreso Latino offers include adult ESL classes (with on-site childcare) and financial and transitional counseling for families preparing to send children to college.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
