The Public and its Problems<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to educational philosopher <\/span><b>John Dewey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in defining a public, the people must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nurture the members that make up the public as unique individuals and take great care to \u00a0\u201csurround the young with the physical and social conditions which best conduce&#8230;to release of personal potentialities\u201d (Dewey, 1927, p. 360). <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By giving unique individuals the individualized tools to help them best succeed, the public makes room for said individuals to make up the republic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Distinguish personal characteristics through the \u201cimprovement of the methods and conditions of debate, discussion, and persuasion\u201d (Dewey, 1927, p. 365). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Appreciate that dialogue is fundamental to the success and growth, however those terms may be defined, of a public.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Practice<\/b><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_361\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361\" class=\"wp-image-361 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-lharring\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/215\/2018\/05\/freire-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-lharring\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/215\/2018\/05\/freire-1.jpg 220w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-lharring\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/215\/2018\/05\/freire-1-119x150.jpg 119w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image 3. We Make the Road by Walking<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where Dewey provides the premise for recognition of a public, <\/span><b>Paulo Freire<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, educator and organizer, proposes a way in which the people may facilitate the recognition of individual agency. Freire emphasizes the importance of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The role of the educator in \u201crecognizing what levels of knowledge people have, in order to create a new knowledge and to help the people know better what they already know\u201d (Freire, 1990, p. 226).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An educator must both respect the intelligence of their students, but also know how to shape this knowledge. This recognition may help people better understand what hidden power already lies within their thoughts and in their words. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The educator acknowledging that their role is not to simply \u201ctransfer knowledge to the group of people who come\u2026.in every moment the educators have been educators but have accepted to be educated too\u201d (p. 156).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For an educator to experience growth, he or she must cede control in the archetypal teacher-student relationship. Ella Baker(2)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The practices of <\/span><b>Ella Baker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, civil rights and human rights activist, support many of the same methods Freire uses in his pedagogy. According to Baker\u2019s ideology, which focused on group-centered leadership, it is important that the people consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cStrong people&#8230;don\u2019t need strong leaders\u201d \u00a0(as cited in Payne, 1989, p. 893).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to place emphasis on the idea that the power of a group is rooted in the collective power within the distinct individuals that make up the group. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is nothing to be substituted for \u201chaving people understand their power and understand their potential power and how to use it\u201d (as cited in Payne, 1989, p. 898). <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much like Freire, Baker suggests that a system in which the people recognize their fortitude through doing, organizing, and contributing to a greater purpose than their own.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both Freire and Baker\u2019s practices support a mutual claim: that through organizing and interacting with one another, the people may learn, and in doing so, become stronger. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Takeaways<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For an individual to benefit from education, they must find the ability to look within and recognize their inner strength. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An approach to education in which students may participate in dialogue and share their experiences allows for a deeper understanding of each individual\u2019s agency. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In doing so, the people may develop stronger senses of self, and be empowered through both the tools they receive and the realization of their potential they reach. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Applying this concept of empowerment to community organizing, an individual\u2019s realization of their own agency in the larger scheme of a group dynamic is the key to a powerful and united community. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who recognize the power within both their thoughts and their words may give us hope for a generation in which enabled voices have the power to impact change within our society today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Empowerment of the Individual: Education\u2019s Inside Job What happens when individuals pursuing an education are not given the tools to realize their potential, or feel validated in both their personal experiences and diverse bodies of knowledge?
