{"id":268,"date":"2018-05-18T13:24:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T17:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/?page_id=268"},"modified":"2018-05-18T15:43:17","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T19:43:17","slug":"grassroots-organizing-synthesis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/grassroots-organizing-synthesis\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Ground with Grassroots Groups: Organization Synthesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What Does Grassroots Organizing Look Like?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Chicago, grassroots organizing in support of grow-your-own teachers initiatives mostly happens outside of issue-specific interest groups; instead, it has grown out of the work of a coalition of grassroots neighborhood associations in collaboration with institutions such as public schools, local universities, and local and state government associations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The movement for teachers to come from the communities they educate can be traced back to the work of the Logan Street Neighborhood Association, which helped build this grassroots network, leading to successful lobbying for the <\/span><b>Grow Your Own Teachers Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2005. The act has built teacher-pipeline programs in communities of color. Their size and power has helped them successfully work to achieve the Grow Your Own Teachers Act. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Coalition-Building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: creating a network of community organizations has allowed the movement to achieve power in Chicago <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Partnering <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with colleges and the government through the Grown your Own Teachers Act has allowed grassroots organizers to implement a pipeline that helps parents and other community members get on the track to become teachers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Small-Scale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: less visible organizing is just as important. This includes: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Formal and Informal <\/span><b>Networking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: to support teachers of color who face extreme burdens that often force them to quit their jobs. When teachers of color have the opportunity to share their experiences with each other, they build collective resilience. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Parent Engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Having parents be involved in schools strengthens schools as educators and participants in local politics. It is both the <\/span><b>effect <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of systematic racism (schools and communities stripped of resources stop students of color from becoming teachers) and one of its <\/span><b>causes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(the lack of teachers of color prevent students from achieving):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-281\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2018\/05\/feedback-loop-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2018\/05\/feedback-loop-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2018\/05\/feedback-loop-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2018\/05\/feedback-loop-624x429.jpg 624w, https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/education-2272-spring-2018-mfriedl2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/213\/2018\/05\/feedback-loop.jpg 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Barriers people of color face to becoming (and staying) teachers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discrimination in the classroom (ex\/<\/span><b>microaggressions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that tell them they are inferior)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Racial Microaggressions: Comments That Sting | The New York Times\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_85JVcniE_M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barriers to higher education<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Poverty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Not being able to afford college or having familial obligations that get in the way<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Lack of resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in schools and communities, which prevents students from graduating (and becoming teachers)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Government shutdown has caused the Grow Your Own Teachers Act to temporarily lose public funding <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>High-stakes standardized testing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> portrays students of color as inferior <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>School shutdowns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> breaks down communities organized around schools<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The proliferation of<\/span><b> charter schools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which block people of color from taking charge of their own education<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What has been the impact on organizing for those involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community organizing has created networks for people of color to share their triumphs and struggles and to find a voice. Specifically, these grassroots groups make spaces in which teachers of color and would-be teachers of color learn to feel empowered to pursue social justice in the classroom.
