They also created Detroit&#8217;s first ever climate action plan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lvejo.org\/about-us\/history\/\">Little Village Environmental Justice Organization<\/a>:\u00a0LVEJO was created by public elementary school parents in Chicago concerned about the risks posed to their children by power plants and toxic waste facilities in their neighborhood. They have fought to close down these plants and are now converting the sites into public parks, addressing the great need for green space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcurbangreens.org\">DC Urban Greens<\/a>: This organization practices urban agricultural methods and sustainability in low-income neighborhoods in southeast DC in order to increase the accessibility of affordable healthy foods and combat food deserts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"block-70519374c2cd5034a2d8\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cghcnola.org\/about-us.html\">Common Ground Health Clinic<\/a>: Started as a first aid station of &#8220;street medics&#8221; just days after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the\u00a0Common Ground Health Clinic is a non-profit organization that provides quality health care for the greater New Orleans community.\u00a0Nurses, physicians, herbalists, acupunturists, EMTs, social workers, and community activists volunteer at CGHC, and since its founding,\u00a0the clinic has served more than 60,000 community members, all at no charge to the patient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice:\u00a0In a city that includes five of the top-25 most-polluted zip codes in the state, DWEJ is a grassroots volunteer organization that\u00a0specializes in community outreach, research and science, building safe homes, and education.
