In attempting to cover up her previous statement, concerning her knowledge about female love, she thus invokes her doubled identity. Several scenes later, Viola invokes her identity again, to rebut Olivia\u2019s love; Viola states: \u201cI am not what I am\u201d (3.1.138). Viola implies here that she is not a man, but a woman, and encompasses a single gender.
