{"id":268,"date":"2017-03-28T22:57:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T02:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/english-2202-spring-2017\/?p=268"},"modified":"2017-03-28T22:58:59","modified_gmt":"2017-03-29T02:58:59","slug":"a-married-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/english-2202-spring-2017\/the-poetics-of-marriage\/a-married-state\/","title":{"rendered":"A Married State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am intrigued by Katherine Philips&#8217; &#8220;A Married State.&#8221; Philips gives\u00a0women\u00a0an option outside heterosexual love, it seems: &#8220;Therefore Madam, be advised by me\/ Turn, turn apostate to love&#8217;s levity,\/ Suppress wild nature if she dare rebel.\/ There&#8217;s no such thing as leading apes in hell.&#8221; She subverts the language of the Book of Homilies by invoking &#8220;rebel&#8221; and &#8220;hell,&#8221; which is an especially interesting tactic in a poem with this title.
