{"id":357,"date":"2017-04-12T12:15:20","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T16:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/english-2202-spring-2017\/?p=357"},"modified":"2017-04-12T12:15:42","modified_gmt":"2017-04-12T16:15:42","slug":"agency-with-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/english-2202-spring-2017\/for-the-love-of-god\/agency-with-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Agency with God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the various poems that we have read for this week&#8217;s theme, I&#8217;m intrigued\u00a0by the different amounts of agency that the narrators have.\u00a0In\u00a0Donne&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Holy Sonnet 19<\/em>, the speaker appears to have absolutely no control on how religion is &#8220;ravishing&#8221; his heart\/soul to poems; in contrast, Herbert&#8217;s narrator is the one that is invited and chooses to feast upon Love. Yet another different approach is in Herrick&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Prayer to Ben Johnson,<\/em> in which Herrick explicitly creates a new &#8220;saint&#8221; and seemingly mocks &#8220;old religion&#8221; (lines 3-4), denying God&#8217;s agency and choosing to craft a new path for himself. I understand that these poems represent the wide range of Christianity practiced in the Renaissance, but I am curious to see what links there are between the authors&#8217; stances on agency and their &#8216; political\/particular religious beliefs (i. e. Herrick&#8217;s stance as a Royalist?
