{"id":78,"date":"2015-01-13T15:33:18","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T20:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/german-2204-spring-2015\/?page_id=78"},"modified":"2015-01-13T15:33:18","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T20:33:18","slug":"essay-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/german-2204-spring-2015\/essay-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Essay Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Essay Writing Checklist<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, you should go through the whole list; in practice, you may not have time, so you should pick the sections that are most useful to you!<\/p>\n<p>____ The essay is of the appropriate length, has your name and a title.<\/p>\n<p>____ Proofread once through to catch any typos or known spelling errors.<\/p>\n<p>____ Double-check any words you looked up in the dictionary to see if you chose the right definition, or think about how you might say it differently in the German you know.<\/p>\n<p>____ \u00a0<strong>Keep it simple. <\/strong>If there are any complex sentences you think might be wrong, try to reword them more simply.<\/p>\n<p>____ All <strong>verbs<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>____ <strong>agree<\/strong> with their subjects (remember e.g. Leute are plural, Familie is singular)<\/p>\n<p>____ are <strong>conjugated<\/strong> correctly (<strong>watch past participles, haben\/sein<\/strong> etc.)<\/p>\n<p>____ are in the <strong>correct position<\/strong> in the sentence (watch for separable verbs, subordinating conjunctions)<\/p>\n<p>____ All <strong>nouns<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>____ are <strong>capitalized<\/strong> (including verbs and adjectives being used as nouns!)<\/p>\n<p>____ have the correct <strong>gender and number<\/strong> (look up correct plural endings!)<\/p>\n<p>____ are in the proper <strong>case<\/strong>.\u00a0 Remember to:<\/p>\n<p>(1) <strong>add -n in the Dative Plural, <\/strong><br \/>\n(2) <strong>add -(e)s in the masculine and neuter genitive <\/strong><br \/>\n(3) <strong>add -(e)n to masculine weak nouns<\/strong> except in the Nominative Singular<br \/>\n(4) <strong>use Nominative, not Accusative, after sein and werden<\/strong> [Das ist <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">mein<\/span> Bruder NICHT Das ist <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">meinen<\/span> Bruder.]<\/p>\n<p>____ All <strong>pronouns (er, sie, sein, ihr)<\/strong> are in the correct<strong> case, gender, and number<\/strong>.\u00a0 Remember that even nouns for inanimate objects are referred to by their gender: only neuter nouns are referred to by <em>es<\/em> (e.g. Wo ist <strong>der<\/strong> Stuhl?\u00a0 <strong>Er<\/strong> ist hier.)<\/p>\n<p>Note: If you use <strong>man<\/strong> [=one], remember that (1) you should not switch to er\/sie in the same sentence ==&gt; &#8220;Wenn <strong>man<\/strong> Hunger hat, soll <strong>man<\/strong> Kuchen essen.&#8221; (2) <strong>man<\/strong> is <strong>nominative<\/strong>; its accusative is <strong>einen<\/strong>, dative is <strong>einem<\/strong>, and genitive is <strong>sein<\/strong>. ==&gt; e.g. &#8220;Wenn man sein Auto w\u00e4scht, wird es regnen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>____ <strong>Prepositions<\/strong> and their cases are correct (AKK: durch, f\u00fcr, gegen, ohne, um; DAT: aus, au\u00dfer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu)<\/p>\n<p>____ <strong>Negations<\/strong> are in the proper place (and remember to use &#8220;<strong>kein<\/strong>&#8221; instead of &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">nicht ein<\/span>&#8220;!)<\/p>\n<p>Adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsa.umich.edu\/german\/hmr\/schreiben\/checklist.html\">http:\/\/www.lsa.umich.edu\/german\/hmr\/schreiben\/checklist.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Essay Writing Checklist Ideally, you should go through the whole list; in practice, you may not have time, so you should pick the sections that are most useful to you!
