Arctic fires are not limited to aboveground forest fires which can be beneficial for terrestrial ecosystems, bringing us to the true problem that we are currently facing in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>Arctic <strong>peatlands contain more than 25% of the world&#8217;s total soil carbon.<\/strong> Peat is comprised of accumulated organic matter that cannot decompose because of the presence of water. Arctic peatlands are frozen as permafrost, further preventing decomposition. Known as <strong>zombie fires,\u00a0<\/strong>Arctic wildfires will burn downwards into this thick peat layer, smoldering for months.\u00a0<em>Even snow coverage does not put these fires out.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/7200\/1*Hl8q3YVnRCXnNUluUV3dLQ.png\" alt=\"Zombie\u201d Fires in the Arctic\u2014 Clickbait or real? | by Pierre Markuse | Sentinel Hub Blog | Medium\" width=\"491\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the big deal?\u00a0<\/strong>These fires <strong>release A LOT of carbon into the atmosphere<\/strong>, 244 megatons during the summer of 2020 alone, to be exact. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, raising air temperatures. What happens next?\u00a0<strong>MORE FIRES.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The increase in Arctic fires that has been increasingly apparent in recent years is a direct result of climate warming. Warmer temperatures&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>1. Dry out vegetation<\/p>\n<p>2. Increase lightening strikes<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, more matches and more fuel will result in more fires. In the Arctic, air temperatures are warming at <strong>2x the rate of the global average<\/strong>, accelerating these processes.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/flash\/2020\/fire-on-ice-arctic-wildfires-are-the-new-symptom-of-a-warming-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/sitn.hms.harvard.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/sitn-fires-03.png?resize=720%2C457\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arctic fires create a positive feedback loop, contributing to further warming, among other effects.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>More positive feedback loops:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Arctic is, in large part, covered in snow. Snow has high albedo, meaning that it reflects solar energy rather than absorbing it. However, when <strong>soot created by smoke settles onto the snow, turning it black, this albedo is significantly decreased<\/strong>. Solar energy is absorbed into the ground, warming the ground and melting ice. <strong>This increases fires<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>When Arctic fires burn into the peat, <strong>permafrost thaw is accelerated<\/strong>. Thawing permafrost allows for decomposition of the accumulated organic matter, <strong>releasing CO2 and methane<\/strong>, an even more potent greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. <strong>More greenhouse gas = rising air temperatures = more fires<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The smoke generated by these fires can have detrimental health impacts on local communities<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.themoscowtimes.com\/image\/article_1360\/a4\/Ez92tcbVkAAH_sT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cWildfire Smoke Blankets Russia\u2019s Third-Largest City.&#8221; April 27, 2021. Alexander Oshchepkov \/ NGS.ru<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What is being done about this issue?\u00a0<\/strong>Research regarding Arctic wildland fires and their potential impact on the globe is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Two main projects have been developed within the Arctic Council to address this issue.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The Circumpolar Wildland Fire Project<\/strong> was started in 2020 by the <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gwich\u2019in Council International within the e<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mergency prevention, preparedness, and response working group. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The goal of this project is to foster collaboration, knowledge and resource sharing, cooperation and engagement between permanent participants and states, and create a dynamic evaluation of the response to wildfires in the Arctic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Arctic Wildland Fire Ecology Mapping and Monitoring Project (Arctic FIRE)<\/strong> was also spearheaded by the Gwich\u2019in Council International within the <\/span><\/span>Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna working group. This project has a focus on examining the extent of the impact of fires on the ecosystem, local communities, and climate change as a whole through mapping burned areas, integrating indigenous knowledge, and evaluating the ecological effects.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Considerations for future project and policy development&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus should be placed on preventative measures such as satellite monitoring and alert systems<\/li>\n<li>This will not be accomplished by the efforts of each individual state.
