Nacida en Santiago, Chile en 1971, Nona Fernández es una de las autoras chilenas más destacadas en años recientes. Her work, a combination of short stories, personal essays, and novels, is defined by its resistance to easy categorization within literary genres. In many of her books, we encounter a disorienting mix of personal memories, wholly fictional elements, the influence of science fiction, and above all, the traumatic history of Chile—a recurring theme in her work. Though they engage with this history in very different ways, many of her most successful books, such as “La dimensión desconocida” (Penguin Random House, 2016), “Mapocho” (Planeta, 2002), and “Chilean Electric” (Alquimia, 2015), address the pain caused by the dictatorship or other traumatic episodes that have shaped contemporary Chile.
