For a book like Chilean Electric, which takes such an abstract form and functions as a collection of memories without a specific plot, we need to seek a structure at the level of content; that is, at the level of the themes, people, events, and places we revisit repeatedly throughout the work. Although there are other things that become central focal points, Nona Fernández literally provides us with a geographic center of the work: La Plaza de las Armas in the center of Santiago, Chile. We begin the book there, with a magnificent description of the light ceremony in the square in the year 1883, supposedly through the eyes of the narrator’s grandmother. This scene and historical moment give us entry into the content of the book: technological progress, the failure of memory, and the backdrop of major events in Chilean history.

Then, midway through the book, the narrator returns to the square in the seventies to confront another lapse in memory: upon seeing a photo of herself as a child on a merry-go-round, she cannot connect her own memories of that day with what can be seen in the image. And in the final passage of the book, we are back in La Plaza de las Armas again, as the narrator is typing on her grandmother’s typewriter. In this powerful scene, she sees a multitude of disappeared individuals filling the square, each with a story to tell. This time, when the lights come on, it represents a new beginning, a significant moment of healing and reflection on the painful past.

For me, these scenes in La Plaza de las Armas were my favorites when reading Chilean Electric—although much of the book exists without very explicit actions or events, living in the mists of memory. These moments in the square had a certain clarity; they were more vivid than the others, with an abundance of details and poetic writing. Consider this quote: “Hundreds of heads and bodies with their respective shadows, trapped for centuries in this scene, waiting for someone to see them, condemned to gather in the public square again and again awaiting illumination.” (Fernández, 104) Without these grounding moments, it would be much more difficult to read and connect with the book.

Nona Fernández, Chilean electric ([Chile] : Alquimia Ediciones, 2015)

Continue Reading →

[5,46,28,69

post-1295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-chile","category-chilean-electric","category-nona-fernandez","category-resenas
["GET
