Nacida en Santiago, Chile en 1971, Nona Fern\u00e1ndez es una de las autoras chilenas m\u00e1s destacadas en a\u00f1os recientes. Con una combinaci\u00f3n de cuentos, ensayos personales y novelas, su obra es definida por ser dif\u00edcil de categorizar en g\u00e9neros literarios. En muchos de sus libros recibimos una mezcla desorientadora de recuerdos personales, personajes y elementos completamente ficticios, la influencia de la ciencia ficci\u00f3n y sobre todo, la historia traum\u00e1tica de Chile\u2014un tema permanente dentro de su obra. Aunque entran en esta historia de maneras muy distintas, muchos de sus libros m\u00e1s exitosos, como\u202f<\/span>La dimension desconocida\u202f<\/span><\/i>(Penguin Random House, 2016),<\/span>\u202fMapocho\u202f<\/span><\/i>(Planeta, 2002) y\u202f<\/span>Chilean Electric<\/span><\/i>\u202f(Alquimia, 2015), abordan el dolor causado por la dictadura u otro episodio traum\u00e1tico que ha tomado parte en formar la actualidad chilena.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez ha experimentado \u00e9xito tanto comercial como cr\u00edtico por su escritura. Sus libros han sido traducidos a m\u00e1s de diez idiomas y publicados por algunas de las editoriales m\u00e1s prestigiosas tanto en Chile como en los EEUU (Alquimia Ediciones y Penguin Random House, respectivamente). De una manera parecida, Fern\u00e1ndez ha ganado premios tanto locales y nacionales como internacionales: en 1995, gan\u00f3 los Juegos literarios Gabriela Mistral; ha recibido el Premio Municipal de Literatura de Santiago varias veces; en 2017, gan\u00f3 el Premio Sor Juana In\u00e9s de la Cruz y en 2016 fue finalista del National Book Award a literatura en traducci\u00f3n en los EEUU.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pero es posible que el elemento m\u00e1s impresionante de Fernandez es que no solo es escritora sino que trabaja extensivamente como guionista de televisi\u00f3n, dramaturga y actriz. Mientras ha ganado muchos premios por su trabajo como guionista, ella ve esta carrera solo como una forma de sostenerse y a su familia, creando una divisi\u00f3n entre su literatura y otra obra creativa. Entre todas las autoras chilenas de su generaci\u00f3n, ella disfruta una de las presencias m\u00e1s grandes no solo en c\u00edrculos literarios, sino tambi\u00e9n en redes sociales y otras formas de difusi\u00f3n literaria por el internet\u2014un elemento clave de su \u00e9xito como autora.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Santiago, Chile, in 1971, Nona Fern\u00e1ndez is one of the most prominent Chilean authors in recent years. Her work, a combination of short stories, personal essays, and novels, is defined by its resistance to easy categorization within literary genres. In many of her books, we encounter a disorienting mix of personal memories, wholly fictional elements, the influence of science fiction, and above all, the traumatic history of Chile\u2014a recurring theme in her work. Though they engage with this history in very different ways, many of her most successful books, such as \u201cLa dimensi\u00f3n desconocida\u201d (Penguin Random House, 2016), \u201cMapocho\u201d (Planeta, 2002), and \u201cChilean Electric\u201d (Alquimia, 2015), address the pain caused by the dictatorship or other traumatic episodes that have shaped contemporary Chile.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez has found both commercial and critical success for her writing. Her books have been translated into more than ten languages and published by some of the most prestigious publishers in Chile as well as the USA (Alquimia Ediciones and Penguin Random House, respectively). Similarly, Fern\u00e1ndez has won awards both locally and internationally: in 1995, she won the Gabriela Mistral Literary Games; she has received the Santiago Municipal Literature Prize several times; in 2017, she won the Sor Juana In\u00e9s de la Cruz Prize; and in 2016, she was a finalist for the National Book Award for Translated Literature in the USA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But perhaps the most impressive element of Fernandez is that she is not just a writer\u2014she works extensively as a television screenwriter, playwright, and actress. While she has won many awards for her screenwriting, she sees this career only as a way to support herself and her family, creating a division between her literature and other creative work.
