This work won the Ribera del Duero Prize (Madrid, 2022). Throughout six stories, Colanzi uses a blend of the everyday and the supernatural to explore themes of cultural identity, environmental destruction, and gender and feminism. Although Colanzi explores various themes beyond gender, most of her narrators are girls or young women. For example, her story “The Cave” is narrated by a woman who has just given birth to two babies and reflects on how her mother did the same. Her story, “The Narrow Road,” speaks of a girl’s experience within a religious colony. Finally, her story “The Greenest Eyes” discusses the impact of colonialism’s values on a young girl. Colanzi makes the perspective not only of women but also of childhood powerful, emphasizing a perspective that is not often highlighted. In the following entries, I will describe each mentioned story in detail.
