En su antolog\u00eda <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aqu\u00ed hubo una mujer <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Rep\u00fablica Dominicana, \u00daltimos Monstruos Editores, 2018) la autora ha recogido una variedad de sus cuentos premiados en diferentes cert\u00e1menes. Los quince cuentos de esta antolog\u00eda cuentan la evoluci\u00f3n de la autora, y revelan su valent\u00eda al escribir historias inc\u00f3modas sobre el amor, sobre cuerpos violentados, y sobre abandonos. Los cuentos en esta colecci\u00f3n var\u00edan e entre los c\u00f3micos y los sobrios, y est\u00e1n llenos de representaciones comunes y poco comunes sobre las dificultades de ser mujer en nuestra sociedad de hoy en d\u00eda.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Le\u00ed la antolog\u00eda completa en una sola sentada, ya que me encontr\u00e9 inmersa en el lenguaje de Antigua y de las escenas que pintaba con sus palabras. Antigua es fiel a las frases y la cultura dominicana, que se manifiesta tanto en sus cuentos centrados en los ambientes del Caribe como en los situados en la ciudad de Nueva York, para presentarnos las experiencias de la escritora como una mujer e inmigrante dominicana. Como cuenta la escritora cubana Dainerys Machado Vento en <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elbeisman.com\/revista\/post\/aqu-hubo-una-mujer-de-kianny-n-antigua\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">una rese\u00f1a cr\u00edtica p\u00fablicada en El BeiSmAn<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cEl lenguaje de la autora es desinhibido, sin llegar a coloquialismos.\u201d La escritura de Antigua es sencilla y conversacional, pero llena de descripciones. Por ejemplo, as\u00ed comienza su cuento \u201cDe tal palo a tal astilla\u201d, aunque con un <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">plot twist<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> significativo:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mi mam\u00e1 y yo somos dos gotas de agua. Una misma silueta en cuerpos distintos. Su pelo rubio tostado por el sol; el m\u00edo amarillo como ojos de gato. Su bocota capaz de levantar los m\u00e1s terribles piropos; la m\u00eda capaz de abarcar la mayor\u00eda de las cosas mencionadas en los piropos. Los ojos de mi mami (sin ofender) son como dos cucarachas, grandes y marrones; los m\u00edos como dos almendras secas. Mami tiene las caderas como solo el Caribe bautiza; mi cuerpo, moldeado como escultura de Maillol, pero color caramelo (modestia aparte). En fin, f\u00edsicamente entre ella y yo solo hay quince a\u00f1os de diferencia (p\u00e1g. 67).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">El cuento \u201cEl desyerbe\u201d puede ser el m\u00e1s c\u00f3mico de todos. Este cuento narra, de forma detallada y expansiva, la experiencia de un personaje que se hace una depilaci\u00f3n de cera &#8211;un <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">brazilian wax<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Con este cuento me re\u00ed much\u00edsimo, mientras al mismo tiempo torc\u00eda mi cuerpo por como la escritura de Antigua me hac\u00eda sentir el dolor y la incomodidad del personaje principal.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No todos los cuentos de <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aqu\u00ed hubo una mujer<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cuentan situaciones cotidianas. Algunos, como \u201cUna hora de vida\u201d y \u201cLa corona\u201d, abarcan g\u00e9neros de la ciencia ficci\u00f3n o imitan las t\u00e9cnicas de la escritura de lo real maravilloso. Sin duda esta antolog\u00eda gu\u00eda a sus lectores en una aventura llena de giros y sorpresas. No me cabe duda de que esta es una colecci\u00f3n de cuentos especial, representativa de una autora que ha perfeccionado la t\u00e9cnica de contar historias que dejan impresiones significativas en sus lectores y lectoras.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Kianny N. Antigua, a professor of Spanish at Dartmouth College and author of more than thirty publications, including scholarly articles, short stories, children&#8217;s books and novels. In her anthology Aqu\u00ed hubo una mujer (Dominican Republic, \u00daltimos Monstruos Editores, 2018) the author has collected a variety of her award-winning stories. The fifteen stories in this anthology demonstrate the evolution of the author and reveal her courage in writing uncomfortable stories about love, about violated bodies, and about abandonment. The stories in this collection range from humorous to sober and are filled with common and uncommon depictions of the difficulties of being a woman in our present society.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I read the entire anthology in one sitting, as I found myself immersed in Antigua&#8217;s artistic use of language. Antigua is faithful to Dominican phrases and culture, which is shown through both in her stories focused on Caribbean environments and those set in New York City, that demonstrate how the writer draws inspirations for her short stories from her experiences as a Dominican woman and immigrant. As the Cuban writer Dainerys Machado Vento says in a critical review published in El BeiSmAn, \u201cThe author&#8217;s language is uninhibited, without reaching colloquialisms.\u201d Antigua\u2019s writing is simple and conversational, but full of descriptions. For example, this is how her story \u201cDe tal palo a tal astilla\u201d begins, although it ends with a significant plot twist:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mi mam\u00e1 y yo somos dos gotas de agua. This story narrates, in a very detailed way, the experience of a character who gets a wax hair removal &#8211; a Brazilian wax. I laughed a lot at this story, while at the same time twisting my body in sympathetic pain because of how Antigua&#8217;s writing made me feel the discomfort of the main character.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not all the stories in Aqu\u00ed hubo una mujer speak about mundane situations. Some, such as \u201cUna hora de vida\u201d and \u201cLa corona,\u201d encompass genres of science fiction or imitate the techniques of writing from \u2018lo real maravilloso\u2019. Without a doubt, this anthology guides its readers on an adventure full of twists and surprises. I have no doubt that this is a special collection of stories, representative of an author who has perfected the technique of telling stories that leave significant impressions on her readers.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kianny N.
