GOODREADS

Socorro Venegas ‘La Memoria Donde Ardía’: A Lyrical and Moving Collection of Short Stories

“La memoria donde ardía” by Socorro Venegas is a collection of deeply interconnected stories. The book addresses themes such as abandonment, lost love, and violence, all masterfully captured by the author. I had never read a book by Socorro Venegas before and was greatly surprised because I didn’t expect to connect so much with the ideas and themes of the stories. I came across this book through a recommendation, and my initial disposition was one of curiosity, without clear expectations.

“La memoria donde ardía” offers a collection of 19 stories that explore recurring themes such as abandonment, lost love, violence, and religion. Each story is masterfully connected, creating a deep and complex narrative fabric. The author uses a fascinating and captivating writing style that keeps the reader hooked from the first page while discovering the connections and common threads between the stories. Each story alternates between first and second person perspectives, which are important for each story. When Socorro wants to impress her audience in a different way, she uses a calculated perspective. A standout example is the story “Los aposentos del aire,” which deals with two sick children living in a hospital and questions the roots of religion in their society. The story caught my attention because it takes the perspective of the mother of one of these sick children. The mother, in her suffering, cannot understand how her god could have allowed a child to suffer in this way. Socorro captured everything perfectly: the complicated and forbidden desire of a woman, the feeling of isolation, the aspect of growing up too fast in a cruel world, the idea of understanding your world in a complicated and deformed way, and learning from the different and unexpected.

Socorro Venegas’ writing style is unique and captivating, with a flow that represents the themes very well. The stories address love in its multiple forms: tragic, beautiful, lost, complicated, necessary, and even forgotten. The author captures these themes with impressive depth and a tangential touch that results in incredibly profound lines. The characters are very well developed and believable, achieved by writing unique and human details for each person. Each story offers an intimate look into their lives, making the reader feel emotionally connected to their experiences and struggles. As a reader, I felt immensely connected to the issues faced by the women in the pages. One of the book’s strengths is how Venegas smoothly transitions from one theme to another, maintaining the reader’s interest. However, the emotional intensity of the stories can be overwhelming for some readers. My favorite story, “Los aposentos del aire,” successfully tackles difficult themes. Socorro manages to write about sick children and their painful, confined lives with softness but also with a stark reality regarding the theme.

One of my favorite quotes that helps capture the depth of the writing is: “Then I remembered again that together we were a larva, waiting for the moment when my room would break my body.” It is part of a story exploring the changed life of a pregnant woman still struggling to maintain some autonomy against all the inevitable changes. I found this novel to be like the caress of a long-needed hug. If you are a fan of “Pelea de gallos” by María Fernanda Ampuero, I highly recommend “La memoria donde ardía.” Both books share similar themes of violence and love, although Venegas does it with a unique and captivating style that sets her apart. I would compare both collections of stories because they have similar reading structures, and while reading Socorro Venegas’ stories, I kept recalling the structure of María Fernanda Ampuero’s stories.

“La memoria donde ardía” had me questioning my own ideas about innocence, violence, religion, and gender. It is a book that leaves a deep mark and makes you reflect long after you have finished it. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to dive into a well of self-discovery and to lovers of intense and well-developed plots. It is especially suitable for those interested in gender and religion themes. I would give “La memoria donde ardía” 4.5 out of 5 stars for its captivating writing, the depth of its themes, and the emotional connection it achieves with the reader.
