She talks about her relative [ancestor] Charles Wiener who explored Peru and talks about the complications of having that in her history, and at the beginning of the novel, she talks about museums and recognizing herself in the "huaco retrato" that she saw there. To me it seems like this book is practically a museum of her life, her experiences, and all of her very unique perspectives on love, on race, on history. I found it to be a really fulfilling read. I was especially satisfied (no spoilers) with the ending and the way she brought everything together, the way she alternated between different styles. It was historic, it was emotional, there were a lot of things I found relatable and some that I didn't. I felt like it was a great learning opportunity to read this book.
