I read it while traveling—this experience of being in a new place put me in the perfect mindset to immerse myself in the minds of the characters.

Crímenes domésticos presents a series of stories featuring women who defy social expectations. They are of various ages and life situations. Throughout the stories, themes such as motherhood, female identity, and the subversion of traditional roles are explored. In all the stories, there are women who do not do what they “should” do. My favorite stories are “El olor de sus pechos,” in which a pregnant woman begins to challenge fidelity norms in her relationship using her changed body to her advantage, and “Monstruosa sororidad,” in which a woman acts as the opposite of “a good mother,” but makes us understand her with the question, “And what would you have done in my place?”

Vanessa Vilches Norat’s style is unique and evocative. Her ability to immerse the reader in the emotions and thoughts of her characters is remarkable. She uses innovative techniques such as an email chain that functions as a diary in “Tortita de Manteca.” The themes explored in Crímenes domésticos are deep and provocative, challenging the reader to reflect on social norms and the role of women in society.

Vilches Norat manages to challenge norms through the complete immersion in the minds of her characters. The characters in Crímenes domésticos are complex and well-developed. Through their stories, Vilches Norat manages to convey a wide range of emotions, from empathy to indignation, with profound and lasting emotional impact. She provides a window into complex emotional states by allowing us to enter the minds of multiple characters. For example, in “Hermosas garras,” we read the thoughts of an employee and her manager during their interactions with each other. Through this strategy, Vilches Norat adds a level of emotional complexity in what they decide not to say more than in what they do say. Entering the minds of people characterized by the title as “criminals” also adds complexity to the book. “I think literature is a magnificent space for criminals, those who somehow want to break and question stereotypes and social norms,” notes the author. In particular, she seems fascinated by changing assumptions about typical mothers and women with characters who think and act differently from what we would expect.

One of the most notable aspects of Crímenes domésticos is its ability to address complex issues in an accessible and provocative manner. Multiple times, she does this through the tropes of hands and voice, as in the story “De la perfección de sus manos.” In the story, the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter is expressed between the difference in the idea of her daughter (her perfection, apparent in her perfect hands when the daughter is asleep) and their real interactions (when they talk during the day). Vilches Norat also spoke about her interest in these aspects of the body in our interview: “Within the relationship between a mother and her children, hands are absolutely important. They are the ones that soothe, the ones that give love, the ones that scold, the ones that hit […] The voice is [also] very important. They are those spaces of the body that transmit sensations, that transmit feelings between that mother and daughter.”

Crímenes domésticos is similar to other contemporary works written by Latin American women in its exploration of what it means to be a woman and the relationships between mothers and children. The ideas of motherhood are also challenged in stories like “Persianas” from Pelea de gallos by María Fernanda Ampuero, where it concludes with a scene of sexual abuse from a mother to a son. However, this is more of a perversion of being maternal, while in Crímenes domésticos, the mothers have understandable and non-perverse motives—we are more in their minds and understand their motivations.

In conclusion, Crímenes domésticos is a powerful and original work that challenges social norms and explores the complexity of domestic life from a feminist and subversive perspective. I recommend this book to those who want to challenge their beliefs or perceptions of societal norms. Through her literature, Vilches Norat aims to open the possibility of an alternative script for women, and I believe she succeeds in this mission.

5/5 stars

Vanessa Vilches Norat es una voz poderosa y original en el mundo de la literatura latinoamericana.
