\"U.S.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Deaths from Armed Conflicts. It is estimated that the total number of deaths from the Vietnam\u00a0Conflict was around two million(Spector). \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

This disaster creates an interesting <\/span><\/span>dichotomy<\/span><\/span> between spectacle and slow disasters, especially considering the way that the U.S. and other foreign entities <\/span><\/span>view the ongoing disaster in Vietnam compared to the reaction of the combat <\/span><\/span>during\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the war<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>The existence of the Vietnam War is not an <\/span><\/span>unheard-of<\/span><\/span> disaster that was sheltered from the eyes of the public<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or <\/span><\/span>ignored by the media<\/span><\/span>. A vast majority <\/span><\/span>of the U.S. <\/span><\/span>population\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at least know that the war happened an<\/span><\/span>d know that the United States <\/span><\/span>involvement<\/span><\/span> was incredibly <\/span><\/span>controversial<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The war clearly reached the <\/span><\/span>news and<\/span><\/span> had a major impact on U.S. society<\/span><\/span> \u2013 clearly observable through the mass anti-war <\/span><\/span>protests of the 60s and 70s<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>These things I would argue reflect the typical <\/span><\/span>features<\/span><\/span> of a spectacle: media attention, mass awareness by the public, and influence on society at large.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>What seems more forgotten and less talked about<\/span><\/span>, however, is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the aftermath. In the wake of the war, <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span> even three decades later, the U.S has recovered in part<\/span><\/span>, likely<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because<\/span><\/span> no combat took place on U.S. soil. Vietnam has not <\/span><\/span>experienced<\/span><\/span> the same <\/span><\/span>easy recovery<\/span><\/span> from the war. The toxic chemicals have remained in the water, in the soil, and in the bodies of the people of Vietna<\/span><\/span>m since the U.S. <\/span><\/span>soldiers<\/span><\/span> left in 1975. The economy has remained stationary, and people continue to suffer huge physical consequences of the war<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(Timeline)<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>The United States is largely <\/span><\/span>unaffected<\/span><\/span> by the current <\/span><\/span>situation<\/span><\/span> in Vietnam, <\/span><\/span>despite<\/span><\/span> the <\/span><\/span>overshadowing<\/span><\/span> facts that the U.S is at fault, or a<\/span><\/span>t very least a contributor, for much of the suffering.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0If a person wants to find information on the aftermath of the war and specifically of the Agent Orange chemicals, you <\/span><\/span>have to<\/span><\/span> look for it.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The media does <\/span><\/span>not simply display images of sick kids and contaminated forests all these years after the war<\/span><\/span>. Viet<\/span><\/span>n<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>m<\/span><\/span> has become to some degree forgotten by the international world, while rural communities and ethnic minorities<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> especially<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> continue to face the harsh <\/span><\/span>repercussions<\/span><\/span> from the war. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
