data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> disaster surrounding Agent Orange cannot be considered fully without the context of the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vietnam<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> War<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: the war being a disaster <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in its own right as well as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the foundational event that led to the disastrous use of toxic chemicals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by the United States <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ilitary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agent Orange is a powerful chemical herbicide that was used <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alongside Agent White and Agent Blue, two other similar chemicals, to<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">destroy<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">foliage<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Vietnam during the Vietnam War<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Cusato<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agent Orange was first deployed in 1961, six years after the beginning of the war in Vietnam<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Palmer 2007)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The chemicals were sprayed for roughly a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ten<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> per<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iod with a vast majority of the spraying ending<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by 197<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Cusato 2018). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lasted until 1975, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was fought between <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the South Vietnamese with assistance fr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">om the U.S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">the communist<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">aligned <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Viet Kong of North Vietnam. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The U.S. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">involvement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the war has long been considered incredibly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">controversial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">believing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> it to be the \u201cmost <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">controversial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of American Wars\u201d (Appy 2018). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The United States involvement in the war <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> linked to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> then<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ongoing Cold War struggle between the U.S. and the Soviet Unio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in an ideological sense <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">democracy <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">versus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> communism. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">controversial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> aspects <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from whether the U.S should have been involved at all: was this a \u201cnoble struggle\u201d or a \u201ctragic interve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ntion\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and was the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">true\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intention<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the United States<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to prevent the spread of communism<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Appy 2018)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additionally <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">controversial<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">component<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of this war<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actual use<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agent Orange<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> chemicals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> disaster of Agent Orange does not refer to one instance or one event<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as is the case for many disasters<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but rather begins in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1961 when the United States military implemented the use of the herbicide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0through the present day where the country of Vietnam still faces <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enormous<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> challenges due to the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wide sweeping<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> chemical exposure. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he decade of spraying the chemicals causing massive destruction of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> forest cover and crops<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Palmer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 2007<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is estimated that around fifteen percent of land in Vietnam was directly sprayed with the chemicals, as well as over <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4.8 million people, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">parts of Loas and Cambodia along the Ho Chi Mihn Trail (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Palmer <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2007). The chemicals were spread using aircrafts, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hand-sprayers, boats, and trucks (Palmer 2007). Over this decade, the U.S. sprayed roughly <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eighty million liters of dioxin-based chemicals (Timeline). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The most infamous period of spraying was from 1962 to 1972 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which is referred to as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Operation Ranch Hand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, after which point the chemicals were mostly just used around military bases.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Cusato 2018).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Film of US Soldiers spraying Agent Orange defoliant onto a riverbank without protective equipment\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wUZA0GAMmfI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">U.S soldiers who were often enlisted to spray and distribute Agent Orange were referred to as non-combatants, typically because they refused or requested not to shoot at the enemy (Timeline). Superior officers told soldiers that the herbicide would kill mosquitoes and prevent malaria, leaving the soldiers in the dark on the level of toxicity within the chemicals (Timeline). The fallout of the disaster <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">continues to burden Vietnam generations later. Over three <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">million people are currently facing health difficulties or physical disabilities as a result of exposure, and even this number is thought to be a massive underestimate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Timeline)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Agent Orange has had a huge social impact, and having a disability related to toxin exposure carries huge stigmatizatio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n for individuals and entire families (Timeline). Due to this stigm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">atization<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, people hide away exposed children and family members refusing to even take them to hospitals in some cases (Timel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ine).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The overwhelming number of disabled and sick people in Vietnam has also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">caused<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> stagnation in the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">country&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ability to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">developed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> economically and fully recover from the war even decades later (Timeline).<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The chemical in Agent Orange, Dioxin, is now recognized as \u201cone of the most toxic substances ever produced<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Palmer 2007).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Additionally, the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">environment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from water sources, to abandoned military bases, to villages where people live<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">remain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> grossly contamina<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Cusato 2018)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The disaster surrounding Agent Orange cannot be considered fully without the context of the Vietnam War: the war being a disaster in its own right as well as the foundational event that led to the disastrous use of toxic chemicals by the United States military.
