{"id":950,"date":"2015-09-29T23:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-09-30T03:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/ip3-teach-in-2015\/?page_id=950"},"modified":"2015-09-30T10:52:17","modified_gmt":"2015-09-30T14:52:17","slug":"public-art-feminism-labor-environment-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/ip3-teach-in-2015\/public-art-feminism-labor-environment-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Art: Feminism, Labor, Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We will focus on three artists who engage in some combination of issues around feminism, labor, race and the environment.\u00a0\u00a0Mierle Ukeles took the realization that her domestic labor, as a mother, could be a model for creating works of art.\u00a0\u00a0She turned her attention to under-valued laborers, such as janitors and garbage collectors, and created public art that shows appreciation and respect for those who clean up the world around us.\u00a0\u00a0She is now Artist in Residence at the NYC Department of Sanitation.\u00a0\u00a0We will also look at the work of Rick Lowe, who re-furbishes shot-gun houses for low-income, single, African-American mothers. His recent focus in post-Katrina New Orleans demonstrates the connection between environmental factors leading to the hurricane and its effects on the African-American community.\u00a0\u00a0So too, artist Mel Chin works in New Orleans.
