It was at this body of freshwater that the nymph Arethusa supposedly arrived after fleeing the river god Alpheus. Arethusa explains her flight from Greece to Sicily to a grieving Ceres in Ovid\u2019s Metamorphoses. In this way, Ovid subtly connects the old Greek stories to real Sicilian places. And that\u2019s partially one goal of this trip\u2014to connect the culture, history, and myths from Greece and Rome to Sicily in a concrete way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/italian-3008-spring-2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2016\/03\/wpid-imag0586.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[616]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"IMAG0586.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/italian-3008-spring-2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2016\/03\/wpid-imag0586.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Technically, this wasn&#8217;t the same day, but when driving from Mount Etna to Catania, we passed by the rocks (read: the giant islands in the picture) supposedly thrown by the Cyclopes.
