Moscow Doesn\u2019t Believe in Tears<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>is a great movie that encapsulates the core of Soviet ideals<\/span>, where\u00a0<\/span>Moscow stands unchanged in its prominent morals of hard work, necessary suffering, and resilience.<\/span> As we have discussed in class, Moscow has been around for centuries, enduring years of war and feuding to stand as it does today. In this way, Moscow serves as a representation for Russian<\/span>\u00a0identity, where<\/span> Moscow <\/span>symbolizes endurance and tradition<\/span>. <\/span>As the title of the movie suggests, Moscow is embodied<\/span>\u00a0to be strong and resilient<\/span>\u00a0in the face of hardship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This also includes the song \u201cAleks<\/span>andra\u201d by Sergei <\/span>Nikitin<\/span>. The lyrics, \u201c<\/span>A<\/span>ll things took time to get settled <\/span>in,<\/span> Moscow<\/span> took more than a day to build, Moscow did not believe in tears,\u00a0but it believed in love\u201d further emphasizes the importance of the setting of the movie. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to this, <\/span>Moscow\u2019s symbolism also extends to the characters in the movie. I noticed that <\/span>there is a <\/span>sort of tension between\u00a0<\/span>Muscovite and <\/span>foreigner<\/span>. I <\/span>noticed this in association with <\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>good fortune of the characters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For example,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sergei<\/span>\u00a0and <\/span>Rudolph<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have relatively negative lives <\/span>compared to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Katya and Antonina<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Rudolph\u2019s stray from traditional Russian ideas stems from his fascination with television and western media. For <\/span>Sergei<\/span>, he simply<\/span>\u00a0has<\/span>\u00a0had no former ties to Moscow until he was signed to a famous team. <\/span>Additionally, these characters are marked with their non-traditional Russian names.\u00a0<\/span>Their relatively bad experiences are <\/span>also\u00a0<\/span>cont<\/span>rasted with the successful<\/span>\u00a0career of Katya and the happy<\/span>\u00a0marriage of Antonina <\/span>and Nikolai.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Katya\u2019s charact<\/span>er<\/span> embodies the symbolism of <\/span>Mo<\/span>scow, particularly in her hard work.<\/span>\u00a0Returning to Sergei <\/span>Nikitin\u2019s<\/span> song, the lyrics<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>The hope of the city’s not in vain,\u00a0all will be dressed in verdant green, and Moscow, will find an edge of land, that’s perfect for a tree<\/span>\u201d also encapsulates Katya\u2019s life. Although Katya experienced hardship with her failed <\/span>university exam,\u00a0<\/span>her <\/span>failed\u00a0<\/span>relationship with Rudolph<\/span>, and her <\/span>struggle<\/span>\u00a0to excel<\/span>\u00a0in her profession, she was resilient in the end. She found her ideal soviet <\/span>man in Gosha<\/span>, found success in her career, and raised her daughter. Her story represents the power of grit, especially in a city that <\/span>believes in love and hope. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
