{"id":857,"date":"2020-03-26T21:22:23","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T21:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/russian-2240-spring-2020\/?p=857"},"modified":"2020-03-27T01:56:12","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T01:56:12","slug":"noble-and-peasant-confined-roles-challenged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.bowdoin.edu\/russian-2240-spring-2020\/lmcnett\/noble-and-peasant-confined-roles-challenged\/","title":{"rendered":"Noble and Peasant: Confined Roles Challenged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the three stories assigned, the effort to challenge the perception of the peasant and noble classes is apparent&#8211;just as the itinerants were doing through their various works of art.\u00a0 Which struck me in the literature, however, was not only only painting the peasantry in a more positive, humane, valued, light, but the obvious goal to expose the hypocrisy and foolishness of the nobles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout the texts, the peasants, not the nobles are presented as the heros and wise ones of the story. \u00a0 In \u201cKhor and Kalinych\u201d, both peasants educate and enlighten the narrator. The dynamic between the narrator, Khor, and Kalinych reveal the value that peasants bring to society.\u00a0 But beyond that, Khor and Kalinych\u2019s \u201cmaster\u201d, Polutykin heavily depends on their presence to survive&#8211;which flips the popularly held belief that peasants are dependent on their master.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This \u2018role-reversal\u2019 is taken even farther in \u201cThe Story of How One Russian Peasant Fed Two Generals\u201d. \u00a0 Even the title begins to challenge the statically held power-dynamic between master and peasant, suggesting the general class is, in fact, dependent on the peasants.\u00a0 Furthermore, the text illustrates the generals as foolish, uneducated, and unable to support themselves.
