Becoming a Man

Throughout this week’s ?, it was clear to see that children are socialized at a very young age. Despite parents’ willingness to socialize their children to conform to the stereotypical behavior of their biological sex, there are outside forces that are at play that match, if not surpass, the efforts of these parents. The foci of this week’s readings were on the affects that peer groups have on young boys and how they help to shape their masculinity. The readings emphasized the expectation placed on boys to embody stoicism and that if they presented anything that deviated from this, it was considered a breach of ?. The dynamic within these friend groups was especially interesting to me. Friend groups are meant to serve as support systems for one another but the way in which they are described in the ? portrayed them as a support system for ?. It was also particularly interesting to see the dynamic between boys and girls. Throughout the semester, we have seen the importance of ? in ? and these ?do not deviate from that, instead they describe how it is perpetuated through the relentless ? amongst one another. But at the same time, these kids are engaging in practices that are specifically seeking the validation of their male friends and not their female counterparts. And although the girls make it clear that they are not impressed by their efforts to appear masculine, these boys continue to engage in these practices. It is puzzling for me to think about an explanation as to why these boys do not try to appeal to girls instead of their male friend groups if ? is so enforced, but it does seem to be a trend.
