  • The most common emotions physicians experience (and how to cope with them) – Lana Barhum

    • Doctors have long had to endure the process of delivering news to patients and their families, whether good or bad, without displaying many emotions. However, regardless of their neutral demeanor, doctors also experience emotions, especially if patients recover or become extremely ill. Not all these emotions can be repressed, which can affect doctor-patient relationships. Barhum describes how “choking up or crying, smiling, and providing support were viewed positively by patients, but withdrawing, imposing, and defending oneself were perceived negatively”. Emotion management is part of the occupation and is in the job description for doctors. It is critical for them to always have a positive or neutral attitude to preserve the emotions of others and perform the labor their job asks of them. However, managing emotions through surface acting by putting up an emotionless facade can put a lot of stress on doctors. It is critical for them to know how to cope with their emotions behind closed doors, something Barhum stresses in her article by including mechanisms to help struggling doctors.

  • Managing Emotions During COVID-19 – Kari F. Baber, PhD et al

    • Covid-19, while it is still present, accounted for a lot of the world’s stress during 2020 and 2021. Because the pandemic was so unprecedented, many people found themselves stuck, unsure of what to do, and under a lot of stress. Therefore, a revolution in the acceptance and legitimization of mental health occurred as many people sought help as stress, depression, and anxiety reached new highs and mental health reached new lows. However, for some, emotion management and emotional labor remained critical, especially for parents. This article discusses the emotions that children may have had during the pandemic and what is and is not in control for parents. It suggests strategies like finding fun things to do at home with your family and information regarding social and physical distancing to help parents relieve stress and manage their own emotions and to help them perform emotional labor to help manage their children’s emotions.

  • A step-by-step guide to staying calm during the presidential debate, according to meditation and mental health experts – Andrea Michelson

    • Recently, one large stressor for the American public has been elections. After Donald Trump was elected in 2016, political tensions have soared and so has the stress that arises from that. This article dives into the mental state of the public during the presidential debates and how people can stay calm and manage their emotions during these times. The article states that “unsure situations where you feel a lack of control, like watching a contentious political debate, trigger a visceral fight-or-flight response even if you’re not in immediate danger”. Because of this response, it can be necessary to employ emotion management techniques while watching these debates. Therefore, the article suggests techniques by transforming your physical space into a stress-free environment, “acknowledging triggers and not being afraid to press pause”, and stepping outside to calm down.
