In addition to internet research, I will also be selecting songs based on their cultural significance and if they contain a social message that provides commentary or brings awareness to social issues. Or, if there is an artist with a particular album that addresses these issues. With this, I’ll be observing song lyrics and, if applicable, the song’s music videos to see the artistic decisions that directors and artists use to emphasize the messages from their lyrics as well as the issues they’re referring to at the time. If I have enough time, I will also be looking into other mediums that discuss hip-hop and sociological insights made by audiences or the artists themselves through blog posts, YouTube or TikTok videos, and documentaries. The latter will help me understand how visuals/music help audiences and other non-academics comprehend and digest sociological insights.

Description of Data

Plan of collecting data.

Obtaining data through qualitative research by reading journal articles and sections/chapters of books that discuss some of the following topics: the accessibility (or lack of) of sociology through media, the social impact of music, history and social significance of rap/hip-hop, the criticisms of rap/hip-hop, etc.; and observing digital media such as photography, music videos, and songs that address and provide social commentary on systemic issues; and looking into informal and formal opinion pieces (op-eds, YouTube videos, podcasts, blog posts, etc.) about rap/hip-hop as a genre and the messages that are received in songs. Additionally, while observing and learning about the history, evolution, and contemporary prevalence of rap/hip-hop, I will be analyzing culturally significant songs and other media that support my findings and thesis.

Date, Changes, Reasons

Description of Methods I will gather data (journal articles, book chapters, information about songs, and images/videos) through internet research from Google Scholar and the Bowdoin Library’s CBBCAT search.
